The crawler track shoes form the basis of the mobility of your crawler crane. The shoes support the total weight of the crane, generate traction on different terrains, and help cushion any impact to the surface when hoisting loads. Any premature wear on the shoes increases repair costs.

 

1. Conduct Regular Inspections

Regular inspection is the single most effective way to catch problems before they become serious.

What to check before and after each operation:

Cracks or visible damage on the track shoe surface

Excessive wear on grouser (wedge) height

Loose, missing, or damaged mounting bolts

Deformation or misalignment

Foreign objects lodged between track components

A full-dimension inspection should be performed periodically using calipers and torque wrenches. For critical components, track plate thickness should be measured at multiple points. As a general rule, replacement is required when thickness falls below the manufacturer's limit (typically around 25mm) or when wear exceeds 50% of the original dimension.

2. Keep Track Shoes Clean

Dirt, mud, gravel, and debris are major enemies of track shoe longevity. Abrasive materials act like sandpaper between moving parts, accelerating wear on track shoes, pins, and bushings.

Cleaning practices:

Remove accumulated dirt and debris after each shift

Pay special attention to hard-to-reach areas around pins and bolts

Use water, brushes, or compressed air-avoid aggressive tools that could damage the surface

 

3. Lubricate Moving Components

Proper lubrication reduces friction between track shoes, pins, and bushings, minimizing metal-to-metal contact and heat buildup.

Key lubrication points:

Bushings

Bolts and fasteners

 

 

4. Avoid Common Operating Mistakes

Operator behavior directly impacts track shoe life. Certain practices accelerate wear and increase the risk of breakage :

Regularly monitor and adjust track tension to manufacturer specifications. For a 200-ton class crane, typical tension values range from 80 to 120 kN .

 

6. Torque Mounting Bolts Correctly

Loose track shoe mounting bolts cause vibrations, uneven wear, and potential component failure.

Use a torque wrench to tighten bolts to manufacturer-specified values

For a typical crawler crane, bolt torque may be around 560 lb-ft (760 Nm)

Check bolt tightness regularly-some sources recommend every 250 to 500 operating hours

 

7. Replace Worn Track Shoes Timely

Track shoes wear at different rates depending on usage and environmental conditions. Delaying replacement when wear exceeds limits can damage other undercarriage components, including track chains, rollers, and sprockets.

When to replace:

Grouser height worn beyond manufacturer specifications

Three or more broken shoes on a single track

Bolt replacement rate exceeds 30% per section

Edge curling deformation greater than 5mm

Deep depressions on the contact surface

 

8. Consider Periodic Position Rotation

To promote even wear across all track shoes, consider rotating track shoe positions periodically. Some operators recommend rotating shoes every 250–500 operating hours. This practice distributes wear more evenly across the set and extends overall service life.

 

By following these practices, you can significantly extend track shoe service life-potentially from 2,000 to 3,000 hours up to 2 to 3 years of operation-while reducing maintenance costs and improving overall equipment reliability.
