What is crawler crane top roller

What is crawler crane top roller?

The top roller is an important part of the crawler crane undercarriage parts. It is able to support the top crawler. The crawler crane top roller is located under both sides of the top crawler. A crawler crane generally has four crane top roller, and a few have six, eight or none. The top rollers of the crawler crane are generally smaller than the bottom roller, but there are also a few top rollers that are as large as the bottom rollers, such as some NIPPON SHARYO DH series.

The main function of the crane carrier roller is to support and guide the movement of the crawler. It plays the role of supporting the top crawler shoe to prevent the crawler from hitting. It makes the crawler have a certain degree of tightness, and prevents the crawler from sagging too much, and reduces the running resistance of the crawler to ensure the smooth operation of the crawler crane.

01

High strength Material

A crane top roller is mainly composed of roller body, brass bushing, shaft, cap, floating seals, and O ring. For crane top roller body, we usually use 50Mn, 40Mn2 and 42CrMo, which are hard-wearing, so that can extend roller’s service life. For brass bushing we use is 100% fine cooper Bushing, instead of duplex metal (Iron and Cooper). Compared with other metal materials, copper is relatively soft, which will reduce the friction between components and also extend the working life of top roller. For floating seal, our sizes 100% match the crawler crane top roller, so that there will be no oil leakage. We use high-strength, wear-resistant materials with reasonable structural design to ensure stable performance in long-term use.

02

Excellent performance

Our crane top rollers of Liebherr, Kobelco, Demag, and Hitachi etc.. are able to bear the huge weight of crawler cranes and the heavy objects they lift, ensuring stable operation under various working conditions. Forging, and during the production, we will do the strict heat treatment, like whole quenching and tempering, this will improve the hardness, wear resistance and fatigue strength of top roller. It would increase service life and make your crawler crane works more safe and efficient.

VM® crawler crane top rollers are the first choice of many engineering teams for their high durability and excellent cost performance. They can withstand long-term high-intensity work and reduce the frequency of maintenance and replacement, thus saving you a lot of time and cost.

What are the different types of upper roller?

Integral crane top roller

 Integral crane top roller:

Integral crane top rollers feature a straightforward design where components like the roller body and bearings are typically integrated into a non-detachable unit. This design necessitates replacing the entire crane top roller during maintenance or repairs. The advantage lies in its robust structure, reduced assembly errors, improved sealing performance, and lower risk of failures. However, if any part sustains damage, replacing the entire assembly could potentially increase repair costs.

Detached crane top roller

Detached crane top roller:

Detached crane top rollers feature a modular design that allows individual components such as the wheel body, bearings, and bushings to be replaced separately. This design facilitates cost-effective maintenance by enabling targeted replacement of worn or damaged parts. However, assembling detached carrier rollers requires precise handling to ensure correct alignment and sealing between components. Improper assembly can lead to issues such as leakage or premature wear, underscoring the need for meticulous installation.

How to replace the Crawler Crane Top Roller

Prepare the Necessary Tools and Equipment

Before you begin replacing the track rollers, make sure you have a well-equipped set of tools and equipment. Here's a comprehensive list to get started:

●Service Manual: The manufacturer's service manual for your crane model is a valuable resource. It outlines detailed disassembly and assembly procedures, ensuring you can complete the process with precision. Think of it as your blueprint for success.

●Socket wrenches and impact wrenches: You'll need these tools to loosen and tighten the fasteners that secure the rollers. Choose the appropriate size to match the specific bolts and nuts involved in the process. Think of them as the keys that unlock the roller assembly.

●Jacks and Lifting Equipment: A jack with adequate capacity is essential to safely lift the crane and provide enough clearance to access the undercarriage rollers. Make sure the jack is in good working order and certified for the expected load capacity. Safety first! The jack is your reliable lifter during this critical phase.

●Safety Gear: Always put safety first and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, sturdy work gloves, boots with good traction, and a hard hat. Safety gear is your shield and armor throughout the installation process.

Set the Stage: Set the Stage for Success

●Level and Stable Surface is Key: Choose a flat, solid surface for installation. Uneven ground can lead to instability and pose a major safety risk. Imagine working on a wire rope – a stable platform is essential for focus and safety.

●Secure the Crane: Implement a lockout procedure to prevent accidental crane operation. Use wedges or wheel chocks to prevent the crane from rolling during the process. Think of the lockout as a safety switch and wedges as stops – they prevent unwanted movement.

●Maintain a clean work area: Remove any dirt, debris, or grease from the work area to prevent contamination and ensure proper installation. A clean work space promotes a smooth and efficient process.

Unloading the Bottom Rollers

●Locate the Undercarriage Rollers: Identify the specific track rollers you intend to remove.

●Raise the Crane: Carefully raise the crane using the jacks until there's sufficient clearance beneath the track for accessing the rollers. Ensure the crane remains stable and secure throughout the process. Utilize safety stands or cribbing to support the raised crane.

●Loosen the Fasteners: Locate the bolts or nuts securing the roller to the undercarriage frame. Use the appropriate wrenches to loosen these fasteners gradually and evenly in a specific sequence as outlined in the service manual.

●Support the Undercarriage Roller: As the fasteners loosen, strategically position a pry bar or lever to support the roller, preventing it from falling abruptly.

●Remove the Fasteners: Once completely loose, carefully remove the fasteners and store them in a designated area for later use.

●Extract the Roller: Gently slide the old roller out of its mounting position. If stuck due to rust or debris, use a hammer and chisel (avoiding direct contact with the roller itself) to carefully break the bond.

Install the new bottom rollers

●Positioning the New Roller: Carefully maneuver the new roller into place, aligning it precisely with the corresponding mounting points on the undercarriage frame. Refer to the service manual for proper alignment and orientation instructions.

●Fastener Installation: Carefully place the fasteners (bolts or nuts) back into their respective positions, ensuring they thread correctly. Use the same sequence you used for removal as outlined in the service manual.

●Tightening the Fasteners: Using the appropriate torque wrench and following the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications, gradually and evenly tighten the fasteners in a specific sequence (refer to service manual). Do not over tighten.

Important Notes

●Torque Specifications: Using the correct torque specifications is crucial for proper roller installation. Over-tightening can damage the roller or undercarriage, while under-tightening can lead to loose rollers and potential safety hazards.

●Tightening Sequence:Following the recommended tightening sequence ensures even pressure distribution and prevents warping or damage to the frame or rollers.

●Double-Check Everything: Before lowering the crane, double-check that all fasteners are tightened to the correct torque specifications, the roller is securely mounted and aligned, and there's no play or movement present.

Adjustment and Calibration

●After installation, perform adjustment and calibration of the rollers as needed. This may include adjusting the position and angle of the rollers to ensure balance and stability of the equipment.

Testing and Verification

●Perform functional testing of the undercarriage rollers after installation. This may include testing under partial load or no load to ensure compatibility and performance of the rollers and equipment as expected.

Final Inspection and Cleanup

●Check all mounting screws and fasteners to ensure they are secure and not loose.

●Clean up the work area and remove all tools and materials to ensure safety and neatness.
